HIGHLIGHTS OF RICE CISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES

                                                                                                      REGULAR MEETING

HELD ON MONDAY, MARCH 20, 2006 AT 6:30 P.M.

 

Roll Call/Establish Quorum/ Call Meeting to Order:

A quorum of Betty Schiurring, President; Carolyn Baird, Vice President; Vivian Spanihel, Secretary; Jack Vawter, Laurel Milentz and Joe Lee Perez, Trustees were in attendance for the meeting.  Michael Lanier, Superintendent; Bill Hefner, Assistant Superintendent; and Melissa Neubauer, Superintendent’s Secretary were also in attendance.   The Regular Meeting was called to order at 6:30 p.m. by Ms. Schiurring.

Reports from Board Members:  

Carolyn Baird and Betty Schiurring reported that they attended the Sheridan and

Garwood Open House and that they were very nice.

 

School Reports:

Consent Agenda.  

The following items were on the Consent Agenda:

  1. Minutes of the February 20, 2006 Special Meeting
  2. Minutes of the February 20, 2006 Regular Meeting
  3. Monthly Financial Reports
  4. Budget Amendments

 

Board Response: 

Joe Lee Perez motioned to approve all items listed on the Consent Agenda with

corrections.

 

Motion seconded by Laurel Milentz.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

 

Pre-Algebra at Rice High School.  Item #14

Robyn Machac presented a proposal created by the 6th, 7th, & 8th grade math teachers and the high school math teachers for district wide prerequisites for taking 7th grade Pre-Algebra and 8th grade Algebra 1 and for a Pre-Algebra class at Rice High School for all 9th grade students that did not pass the 8th grade math TAKS Test.

 

Board Response: 

Joe Lee Perez motioned to approve the proposal requiring prerequisites for taking 7th grade Pre-Algebra and 8th grade Algebra 1 and Pre-Algebra at Rice High School for all 9th grade students that did not pass the 8th grade math TAKS Test as presented.

 

Motion seconded by Carolyn Baird.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Garwood Property.  Item #7

The Board discussed the Garwood Ritter property.

2006-2007 School Calendar Change.  Item #8

Mr. Lanier informed the Board that the Colorado County Fair will be a week later than

the previous year resulting in a change on the Approved 2006-2007 School Calendar.

 

Board Response: 

Jack Vawter motioned to approve changing the Colorado County Fair Day from September 8, 2006 to September 15, 2006 on the 2006-2007 School Calendar.

 

 

Motion seconded by Laurel Milentz.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Region III ESC Board Election  Item #9

The Board participated in the Region III ESC Board Election.

No Action Taken.

 

Teacher Appreciation Week. Item # 10

The Board discussed Teacher Appreciation Week.

 

Board Response: 

Joe Lee Perez motioned to do the same thing for Teacher Appreciation week as was done last school year for each campus.

 

Motion seconded by Vivian Spanihel.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

 

 

Judgment against Mike Arnold’s Feed Store & Gravel Co.    Item #11

Mr. Hefner presented a letter from the Colorado County Central Appraisal District requesting the Rice CISD authorize them to put the above mentioned property up for auction with an opening bid of $50,000.00.

 

Board Response: 

Vivian Spanihel motioned to authorize the Colorado County Appraisal District to put

Mike Arnold’s Feed Store and Gravel Co. up for auction with an opening bid of $50,000.

 

Motion seconded by Carolyn Baird.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Special Needs Issues and Program Placement for 2006-2007.  Item #12

Mr. Lanier informed the Board of the special needs issues that the District is facing.

Grade Point at Rice High School.  Item #13

Mr. Lanier presented the Board a request from Mr. Stavinoha (RHS principal) asking to change EID[LOCAL] School Policy to an Average of 90 for grades 9-12 concerning honor roll.

 

Board Response: 

Carolyn Baird motioned to approve the change to EID (LOCAL) changing Rice High School Honor Roll grade point average from 3.0 to an average of 90 as presented.

 

Motion seconded by Vivian Spanihel.

Motion carried unanimously.

 

Pending Litigation Cause No. 21464 .  Item #14

The Board discussed pending litigation.
